When my twins were a little over 2-years-old, a special education teacher and the school director called me into the office and said, “Your children are going to fail kindergarten if you don’t get them help.” I’m a Doctor, and I was stunned.
I, like every other parent who has a child with any type of challenge, whether it’s food allergies or anxiety, was determined to find a solution. But the path to finding answers was filled with obstacles. The information I found was conflicting. Finding the right specialists was difficult. And when I did, I had to wait and travel all over to see them. I missed work, my productivity decreased, and the little support I found compounded the problem.
The experience had such a profound impact on my life - personally and professionally - I decided I had to do something with this experience. I had to help other parents avoid such a disheartening journey.
Talking to 1,200 parents and caregivers and over 500 different providers confirmed my frustration. Shared pain points included (1) a lack of access to care in one location, (2) a lack of information accuracy, and (3) the lack of community support.
